Temporary Externally Funded Non Grant-in-Aid contract post, the indicative duration of which is 10 months, subject to contract.  A panel may be formed from which future similar vacancies may be filled; such a panel will remain active for a maximum period of 12 months.

Basic Function

To operate as part of a team in the development and delivery of classes and practicals to a wide range of courses/programmes at Ballyhaise College.



To operate as part of a team in the development and delivery of agricultural mechanisation and crops education and training to a wide range of courses/programmes within Ballyhaise College.  The person appointed to this post will be assigned to the teaching staff of the College.


Job Objectives

  • Preparation and delivery of classroom lectures in the areas of machinery, mechanisation, crops and farm business planning
  • Delivery of practical skills instruction and the assessment of these skills in all areas of agriculture with a specialisation in machinery and crops related skills
  • Provision of tutorials to students on class work and practicals related to their chosen course
  • Preparation of assessment papers in accordance with Quality & Qualifications Ireland (QQI) guidelines
  • Correcting, recording, verifying and informing students of their progress in the assessment system
  • Assisting with schools and career open days in order to market the courses and give guidance on likely job opportunities for school leavers and mature students
  • Provision of material for practicals, open days, in-service training and educational exhibits
  • Implementing quality assurance including internal verification
  • Managing the health, safety and welfare of students
  • Liaising with relevant internal and external stakeholders
  • Management of a college enterprise and providing leadership and direction for the agricultural service sector
  • Leading the adoption of up to date technology and precision farming in the college
  • Keeping abreast of current concepts and using effective teaching methods to impart this knowledge to the students
  • To participate in the Teagasc Whole College Evaluation process as required
  • To assist management and administrative staff in achieving good governance and risk management through co-operation and adherence to administrative procedures and practices
  • To assist Teagasc in meeting the commitments of the Quality Customer Service charter and action plan through adherence to best practice protocols
  • To undertake self-development and updating through active participation in Performance Management Development System (PMDS) based role-related training and the development of a personal development planner
  • To participate in the annual business planning and risk management process for the College
  • To work ‘out of hours’ when needed
  • To carry out other duties as may be assigned from time to time

Skills Required

Qualifications: Essential

At the time of applying, candidates must hold a relevant Level 8 degree in agriculture or Level 8 degree in agricultural engineering


Qualifications: Desirable

A post graduate qualification in a relevant discipline.

  • Solid understanding and appreciation of the role of Agriculture in the Irish economy


Knowledge: Desirable

  • Familiarity with Teagasc financial management packages
  • Farm business planning and or machinery/fleet investment and management

  • QQI quality assurance procedures

As this role will involve travel between Teagasc centres around the country, the candidates must have their own car and must also satisfy and continue to satisfy during employment with Teagasc, legal requirements to drive unaccompanied on Irish public roads.
